Belgium also made voting compulsory for 16-year-olds

A few months before the European Parliament elections, Belgium announced that it would be mandatory for 16- and 17-year-olds to vote.

The Belgian Constitutional Court announced that in addition to people over 18 years of age, 16 and 17-year-olds in this country are also required to participate in the European Parliament elections.

According to Euronews, voting in Belgium is mandatory for people over 18 years of age, and failure to do so will result in a fine. Also, if a person does not vote more than 4 times in a 15-year period, he will lose his right to vote.

The new ruling of the Belgian court means that from now on, 16 and 17 year olds will face legal consequences if they don’t vote.

In addition to Belgium, voting is also mandatory in Australia, Argentina, Singapore and Brazil.

It should be noted that the European Parliament elections will be held on June 9 (June 20) and the deadline for registration to participate in it will expire in 10 days.

The European Parliament is the main legislative body in the European Union. Currently, this parliament has 751 members and its elections are held every 5 years. This election is one of the biggest voting events in the world and about 450 million European citizens are eligible to participate in it.
