Maduro registered in the presidential elections of Venezuela
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro officially registered to run for the presidential election on July 28, 2024 (7th August 1403). |
According to the AFP news agency, Maduro said on Monday local time in Venezuela in the crowd of supporters who had gathered to support him: Under the influence of the generosity and trust of the people of Caracas, I I became this lowly worker.
In this gathering, he was holding the picture of the former president of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, and his supporters were calling his name while wearing red clothes.
The Venezuelan government and opposition agreed last October to hold presidential elections in the second half of 2024, each group would nominate their desired candidate and international observers would monitor it. But some members of the opposition expressed doubt that the Venezuelan government would adhere to this agreement.
Maria Corina Machado was the opposition’s main candidate to compete with Maduro, but the country’s Supreme Court banned her from holding government positions in January.
This action caused the United States to return some of the canceled sanctions against Venezuela. Different groups have until March 25 (6th of April 1403) to introduce their candidates, but Machado has refused to introduce an alternative candidate for himself.
Venezuela’s opposition has chosen 80-year-old Corina Uris, who is a university professor, as its candidate in the presidential election, but the opposition announced that it could not access the website of the “National Election Council” to register her.
So far, 10 people have been nominated to participate in the presidential elections of Venezuela, but most of them are considered aligned with the Maduro government.
Maduro is running for the third term of the presidency of Venezuela. The Constitution of Venezuela does not set any limits on the number of terms of the president and other elected officials.
