United Nations: 70% of the people of northern Gaza are facing catastrophic hunger

The spokesperson of the United Nations announced that 70% of the population of northern Gaza is facing catastrophic hunger, but the delivery of vital aid to this area is being hindered.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson of the United Nations, told reporters on Wednesday local time: According to the report of the World Food Program, approximately 70% of the population of northern Gaza is facing catastrophic hunger.

Dujarric clarified: However, efforts to provide vital aid to the north of the region have been hampered by access restrictions and ongoing conflicts.

He said: This month, the World Food Program has been able to send only 11 convoys to northern Gaza and provide food for about 74,000 people.

The UN spokesperson emphasized: Due to the huge needs, daily delivery is needed to stop the famine.

Despite the fact that two days have passed since the adoption of the resolution establishing a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the holy month of Ramadan has entered the second half, there is no news of the implementation of this resolution.

After nearly 6 months of Israel’s war in Gaza, the members of the United Nations Security Council on April 6, 1403, equal to March 25, 2024, with 14 positive votes of this council, as well as the abstention vote of the United States and the absence of a veto by this country, with Resolution 2728 In order to establish an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, they agreed to establish a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the remaining 15 days of the holy month of Ramadan.

America had previously vetoed three ceasefire resolutions, but this time it abstained from voting on this resolution, and in this way, due to the non-opposition of the permanent members of the Security Council, this resolution was approved without any opposition. This resolution was arranged by 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council.

Following the approval of this resolution, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced: The trip of the Israeli delegation to Washington, which was supposed to discuss the operation in Rafah, was canceled.

Netanyahu’s office announced in this statement: America has withdrawn from its decisive positions and the Israeli delegation will not go to Washington. This American action harms the efforts to free the prisoners; Because it carries a message for Hamas that international pressure will allow a ceasefire agreement to be reached without the release of prisoners.

This resolution calls for the implementation of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in the month of Ramadan and said: The immediate ceasefire in the month of Ramadan should be observed by all parties, which will lead to a sustainable ceasefire.

This resolution also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and the guarantee of humanitarian access to meet their medical and other humanitarian needs, and calls on the parties to comply with their obligations under international law in relation to all detained persons.
