Finland: The defense treaty with America will weaken our sovereignty
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland announced that a working group chaired by Helsinki has concluded that the defense agreement with the United States will undermine the country's sovereignty. |
Today Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland considered the security treaty between this country and the European Union to be the cause of weakening Finland’s sovereignty.
According to the report of Russia Elium, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland stated that the defense treaty with the United States will weaken our sovereignty, adding: In order for the Parliament (Finland) to approve this agreement, the votes of two-thirds of the representatives are needed.
Finland, which has joined NATO, signed an agreement with the United States last December, which stipulates the deployment of some forces in this country.
According to this agreement, the Pentagon will have access to 15 military bases, the possibility of deploying defense equipment and supplies on the territory of Finland, the entry and movement of American aircraft, ships and means of transport and guaranteeing the protection of American forces.
This agreement does not include the permanent presence of the United States in Finland, so that potential American forces will be present in this country on a rotating basis.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elena Waltonen announced earlier that her country plans to sign a bilateral defense cooperation agreement with the United States in the coming weeks.
At the beginning of March, the Ministry of Defense of Finland revealed that Helsinki had signed a contract with Washington to buy American JDEM and SDB bombs worth more than 96 million dollars.
After the signing of the defense cooperation agreement between Washington and Helsinki, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow regrets Finland’s decision to agree to the deployment of American military bases.
Emphasizing that this will lead to increased tension in bilateral relations, he stressed that once NATO military infrastructure penetrates into Finland, it will be a clear threat to Russia.
