Newsweek: Washington is worried about its obsolete nuclear weapons

The modernization of nuclear weapons by China and Russia and the current state of the US arsenal have caused serious concern to Washington.

The American magazine Newsweek wrote in an article: America’s nuclear weapons are old, and facing the rapid development of nuclear weapons in China and Russia has caused Washington officials to worry; Serious concerns about whether the United States has sufficient resources to modernize its capabilities?

The magazine noted that the modernization of the US nuclear arsenal, which has reached the end of its useful life, is being carried out “with great haste”. However, if key decisions are not made quickly or problems arise when new systems are introduced, “the US nuclear arsenal may again find itself in a precarious position in a dangerous world by the beginning of the next decade.”

Heather Williams, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), told Newsweek: “The next five years, or maybe less, will be really decisive… if we really want to build a nuclear arsenal for the 20th century. First, let’s be serious and compete with our competitors, so there are important decisions we should have made earlier, but we didn’t.

He believes that the United States has delayed too much in updating its nuclear arsenal. As Williams told Newsweek, in his view, this calls into question Washington’s ability to provide nuclear deterrence in the world.

Williams is sure that if this trend continues, by 2030 the United States will be on the verge of nuclear weapons.
