Sir Geoffrey Donaldson, the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) of Northern Ireland and a member of the British Parliament, was accused of sexual assault and other historical sexual crimes and was dismissed.
According to official reports published in England, a 57-year-old woman has also been accused of being an accessory in relation to the alleged crimes.
According to local authorities in Northern Ireland, both accused were arrested by the police and interrogated before being charged.
These two defendants are supposed to go to court next month.
The DUP said in a statement: “The party leader has received a letter from MP Sir Geoffrey Donaldson confirming that he has been accused of allegations of a historic nature and indicating that he has resigned from the leadership of the DUP. He will resign immediately”.
Donaldson has been the leader of this party since 2021 and had the longest term of representation in the parliament. He was first elected for the Lagan Valley seat in 1997.
Senior members of the DUP unanimously appointed MP Gavin Robinson as the interim leader of this party.
The Unionist Party of Northern Ireland (DUP) is opposed to the republicans and supporters of the Irish union with the approach of being under the umbrella of London and supporting the monarchy in England.
