Mirzoyan: Armenia does not intend to join NATO

At the moment, the issue of joining NATO is not on the agenda of the Armenian government, he reminded: Of course, Yerevan has participated in peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan and has also increased its presence in Kosovo. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, this participation is aimed at strengthening cooperation. Armenia is with the western partners. He explained: “Armenia is a democratic country and we want to strengthen democratic institutions, and we see that, for example, the United States and the European Union are good examples in this field.” At the same time, the European Union is ready to help our country to solve the border problems with Azerbaijan, and we welcome this issue.” When the host of the program asked the foreign minister if Armenia is worried about Russia’s retaliatory action. Not wanting to favor the West, he answered: “In 2020, Russia sent its peacekeeping forces to the Nagorno-Karabakh region to monitor the security of the Armenian people, but we witnessed numerous attacks on the Armenian border, and Moscow failed to fulfill its obligations in this regard.” Mirzoyan added: Yerevan is now deepening economic and political relations with Brussels and Washington. He reminded: Of course, I don’t consider this step as turning away from Russia, we are simply trying to ensure the security and development of our country on the democratic path, and we see that there are good partners in this field in the West.

A few days ago, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia announced that the European Union considers Armenia only as a good source for its interests, and the West is indifferent to meeting the real needs of this country. According to Maria Zakharova, the West is turning Armenia into a tool to implement its plans in order to create a second front against Russia in the Caucasus region, and this issue cannot but worry Moscow.

In this regard, Sergey Kupirkin, the Russian ambassador in Yerevan, also said that the United States sees cooperation with Armenia as an opportunity to damage relations between Yerevan and Moscow.
