This treaty was originally signed in 1990 between NATO and the former Soviet Union. Its main purpose was to limit the number of tanks, armored fighting vehicles, artillery, and fighters that each side was allowed to deploy between the Atlantic coast and the Ural Mountains. This treaty was later amended to include countries after the breakup of the Soviet Union and the expansion of NATO towards Eastern Europe during the 1990s.
NATO members refused to ratify the amended version of the treaty, which subsequently led to its suspension by Russia in 2007. Moscow also announced Washington’s plan to deploy anti-aircraft missiles in Europe as one of its reasons for suspending this treaty. Russia withdrew from the treaty in November 2023 citing Western arms aid to Ukraine, sanctions against Moscow and other hostile policies.
