Pellegrini won the election and became the president of Slovakia

"Peter Pellegrini", the candidate supported by the Slovak government, won the second round of the presidential elections of this country, which was held on Saturday, by winning the majority of votes.

According to the AFP, almost all the ballots in the Slovak elections have been counted and Pellegrini received 53% of the votes.

Meanwhile, “Ivan Korchuk”, the former foreign minister of Slovakia, won 47 percent of the votes in the second round of the elections. Korchuk accepted the defeat in the elections and congratulated Pellegrini on his victory.

Kurchuk is a supporter of greater integration with the European Union, and Pellegrini is an ally of Slovakia’s populist Prime Minister Robert Fico and a supporter of greater cooperation with Russia.

50-year-old Susana Kaputova, the current president of Slovakia, announced that she will not be a candidate for the second round. This decision prompted Fico and his allies to try for the presidency. Kaputova is one of Fico’s critics. The Slovakian Prime Minister’s efforts to change criminal laws and restrict the media caused Kaputova to criticize Fico.

Fico has also been accused of getting closer to Russia. He changed parts of Slovakia’s foreign policy and cut off arms aid to Ukraine.

Pellegrini also said that Slovakia will continue to cooperate closely with the European Union and NATO, but the conflict in Ukraine does not have a military solution and he supports the dialogue between Moscow and Kiev.
