Emergency meeting of the Council of Governors regarding the Ukrainian drone attack on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant
The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency convenes an emergency meeting following the Ukrainian drone attack on the "Zaprogya" nuclear power plant. |
According to a statement from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the meeting is scheduled to be held behind closed doors on Thursday at the Vienna International Center. The statement of the agency states that Russia and Ukraine requested the meeting in 2 separate letters to the Chairman of the Board of Governors.
Zaporozhye power plant, which is under the control of Russia, announced yesterday (Monday) by releasing a picture of reactor number 6 of this power plant, that a Ukrainian kamikaze drone (endhari drone) was shot down over this reactor. Moscow also accused Ukraine of other attacks on Sunday and demanded the intervention of the West to stop these attacks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia announced in a statement: The international community and international organizations, especially the International Atomic Energy Agency, should deprive Ukraine of any opportunities and facilities to attack nuclear facilities.
This statement adds: Ukraine, with its criminal activities supported by the United States and its Western supporters, is actually on the path to nuclear terrorist attacks.
The United Nations has expressed concern about this event and said that they have common positions with the International Atomic Energy Agency. Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, also called the Ukrainian drone attack on the Zaporizhzhya power plant “a clear violation of the basic principles of protecting the largest nuclear power plant in Europe” and called for an immediate stop to these attacks.
The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant came under Russian control after the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022. Moscow and Kiev have repeatedly accused each other of attacking this power plant.
Reactor No. 6 of this power plant is currently closed according to Moscow’s announcement. At the same time, any military attack on this power plant could lead to a nuclear disaster.
