The European Parliament approved the amendment of immigration laws

After 8 years of deadlock, the European Parliament finally approved extensive reforms in the migration and asylum policy for the European Union.

Roberta Metsula, President of the European Parliament, said: “This is a historic moment.” We have put in place a strong legal framework on how to deal with immigration and asylum in the EU. More than ten years have passed since its creation. But we kept our promise. Balance between solidarity and responsibility, this is the European way.

The new migration and asylum deal, a detailed set of five separate but interwoven laws, now needs a final green light from member states, which is expected to happen at the end of this month.

The new agreement envisages collective and predictable rules for managing the reception and relocation of asylum seekers. Since the migration crisis of 2016-2015, this issue has been the source of frequent tension in the European Union.

These reforms, which were first unveiled in September 2020, were supposed to bring together all aspects of immigration management, including identifying asylum seekers, speeding up the border crossing process, and refugee resettlement.

Also, EU reforms include faster checks on illegal entry [immigrants], establishment of border detention centers, speeding up deportations of rejected asylum seekers and [creating] a coherent mechanism to reduce pressure on southern countries experiencing large immigration flows. They do.

Dozens of charities that help migrants, including Amnesty International, Oxfam and Caritas, criticized the changes as “dangerous” and said in an open letter during negotiations that the deal would create an “oppressive structure”. which is impossible.

While Hungary is opposed to parts of these reforms, the Prime Minister of Poland has also announced that he will not accept the migration mechanism.
