Lack of consensus in the Security Council on Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations
The temporary head of the Security Council announced that the members of the special committee for examining new members in the United Nations could not reach a consensus on the full membership of Palestine in this international organization. |
Vanessa Fraser, Malta’s ambassador and representative to the United Nations, who this month (April) is the interim president of the Security Council, Thursday evening local time Regarding holding the second meeting of the special committee for the review of new members in the United Nations to review the full membership of Palestine in the United Nations, he said: “There was no consensus.”
At the same time, the permanent head of the Security Council stated: “The majority of the members are in favor of the full membership of Palestine.”
He said: Many countries expressed the fact that Palestine meets all the criteria required by the Montevideo Convention as well as Article 4 of the Charter.
The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations added that as the head of the mentioned committee, he will publish the first draft report and “we will see what happens in the future.”
“We have agreed that the admissions committee should discuss this issue in April. We all know that any member of the council may decide which way to go. Submit your solution for membership.”
Palestine is now a permanent observer at the United Nations. In 2011, Palestine applied for permanent membership in the United Nations, but later decided to remain as a permanent observer for some time.
In April, Palestine sent a letter to the UN Security Council requesting that it reconsider joining the UN as a permanent member.
Countries with this status can participate in most meetings and have access to almost all relevant documents, but do not have the right to vote. Except for Palestine, the Vatican also has permanent observer status in the United Nations.
Countries are admitted to this international body by the decision of the UN General Assembly based on the recommendation of the Security Council.
The UN Security Council will recommend to the General Assembly if 9 of its 15 members vote in favor of this country’s request. Of course, this is if none of the permanent members of the Security Council, including England, China, Russia, America and France, vote against this request and do not veto it. Then the request must win two-thirds of the votes in the UN General Assembly.
