Chad officials sent a letter to the US defense attache indicating a possible cancellation of the Status of Forces Agreement, which would affect the operation of US military personnel in the country. Although the letter did not explicitly require the withdrawal of American forces, it referred to the expulsion of all American personnel, especially the US special operations force stationed there, from the French base in N’Djamena.
The New York Times previously reported that the United States will withdraw 1,000 American military personnel from Niger in the coming months.
Niger’s move is in line with the recent pattern of countries in the Sahel region, an arid sub-Saharan African region, to cut ties with Western countries. They are increasingly moving towards Russia. According to American officials, American diplomats have been trying to preserve a military cooperation agreement with Niger’s military government for the past few weeks, but ultimately failed to reach a compromise.
Furthermore, CNN reports that Chad’s action comes at a critical time for American interests in Africa, and at the same time American officials have warned that Russia’s influence is expanding across the African continent.
