Europeans’ anger at America’s insistence on confiscating Russian assets
The European Union is outraged by the US insistence on confiscating Russian assets. |
According to the Washington Post (WP), the authorities of European countries do not want to confiscate the frozen assets of the Russian Federation.
According to these sources, the Europeans fear that the seizure of assets not only violates international laws, but also undermines investors’ confidence in the euro and provokes retaliatory measures by the Russian Federation.
The publication notes that European officials are unhappy with the US insistence on taking this “dangerous path”. The reality is that most of the frozen assets are located in the EU, so Russian retaliation is likely to target Europe, not the United States. The Americans are trying to pressure the Europeans about the confiscation of assets.
It is recalled that on Saturday, April 20, the US House of Representatives approved projects on additional aid to Ukraine (Kiev should receive approximately $61 billion), Israel and Taiwan, as well as the confiscation of frozen Russian assets. The Senate may consider the bills as early as Tuesday, April 23.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin has already warned that the United States should be held accountable for seizing frozen Russian assets, calling the move a theft.
After the start of the war in Ukraine, the West blocked almost half of Russia’s foreign exchange reserves worth about 300 billion euros. In March, the European Commission agreed to transfer the profits and income from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation to Kiev and spend them on buying weapons and supporting Ukraine’s military industry.
