According to Webangah News quoted by Tasnim News agency, Amir Saeed Irvani, the ambassador and permanent representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran The United Nations said in the meeting of the United Nations Security Council regarding the situation in the Middle East that Iran demands the immediate cancellation of unilateral sanctions against Syria.
The text of the speech of the representative of Iran is as follows: Syria is still dire. Syrian people are suffering from deep economic challenges. According to the latest UN report, 16.7 million people, nearly 70% of Syria’s population, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. The current level of funding allocated to address the humanitarian crisis in Syria is alarming.
The UN report emphasizes that a total of 4.07 billion dollars is needed to fully implement the Syrian humanitarian response plan. This amount is needed to meet the immediate needs of 10.8 million vulnerable people out of these 16.7 million people. It is not a sustainable solution in the long term. Efforts should be focused on rebuilding critical infrastructure, creating conditions for the safe return of refugees and internally displaced persons, and advancing the political process. Unfortunately, the US and its allies have decided to turn a blind eye to the humanitarian situation and continue with their political agenda in Syria. They use sanctions as a tool to achieve goals that they could not achieve through military or diplomatic channels.
Also, they made desperate efforts such as politicizing humanitarian aid and preventing the return of refugees. Such illegal actions can only help prolong the crisis and intensify the suffering suffered by the Syrian people.
The Islamic Republic of Iran demands immediate cancellation of unilateral sanctions. The continuation of such inhumane actions violates the basic human rights of the Syrian people, punishes the entire Syrian population and aggravates the plight of the most vulnerable sections of the society. It appreciates the cooperation with the United Nations and other international organizations, which provide the necessary facilities for relief and assistance to the crisis-affected areas. Any assistance mechanism must be implemented in close coordination with the Syrian government and guarantee the utmost respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. On April 1, 2024 against our diplomatic premises in Damascus, it strongly condemns.
The Israeli regime commits a clear violation of the UN Charter, especially Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, International Law, Sovereignty, Independence and the territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic. This gross violation was also a violation of the immunity of representatives and diplomatic and consular places. We also strongly condemn the aggressive actions of the Israeli terrorist regime against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic, which continue with complete impunity and without any reaction from the Security Council. > The Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to solving this crisis through a political solution. Iran will continue to support a political process that is truly under the leadership and ownership of Syria and facilitated by the United Nations, as well as helping the people and government of Syria to restore the unity and territorial integrity of their country.
We continue to support the efforts of Mr. Pederson, the Special Envoy, to resume Constitutional Committee meetings as an effective mechanism for moving the political process forward.
Restoring the territorial integrity of Syria requires continuous efforts to fight against all terrorist groups. In this context, the Islamic Republic of Iran fully supports and assists the Syrian government in its anti-terrorism efforts.
However, it is necessary to pay special attention to the protection of civilians during anti-terrorism efforts.
The Islamic Republic of Iran once again reiterates its request for the immediate withdrawal of all American military forces from Syria, which have occupied parts of this country’s territory. The continued illegal presence of American forces in Syria not only violates the sovereignty and territory of Syria, but is also the main source of instability and insecurity in this country and only provides space for terrorist groups to strengthen their position and commit more crimes.
Mrs. President,
Along with its partners in the Astana process, the Islamic Republic of Iran is committed to work towards the normalization of the situation in a long-term and stable way in and around Syria. It is also very important to do everything possible to facilitate the safe and dignified return of Syrian refugees to their homeland and to meet their humanitarian needs. is to force the Security Council of the rebellious Israeli regime to immediately stop the war and genocide in Gaza, establish an immediate and permanent ceasefire and end its destabilizing activities in the region.
