America banned the import of Russian uranium

In continuation of the tension between Moscow and Washington, the representatives of the US Senate approved the plan to ban the import of low-enriched uranium from Russia to this country with a majority of votes.

report Mehr News Agency According to Reuters, the representatives of the US Senate approved a plan that bans the import of Russian uranium to the US.

Previously, the representatives of the US House of Representatives approved this plan, and on Tuesday evening, the representatives of the Senate approved it with the majority of votes.

According to the legislative process in the United States, this plan must be signed by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, in order to become a law and be implemented.

Last December, the US House of Representatives passed a bill that would ban imports of low-enriched uranium from Russia. In recent years, the US has tried to replace Russian fuel with high levels of low-enriched uranium to power its nuclear reactors.

In February, the U.S. Department of Commerce reported that Russia’s purchases of uranium and other radioactive elements in 2023 will exceed those purchases in more than a decade.

Last March, reports from the Russian company Atom Energoprom (part of the state-owned company Rosatom) indicated that Rosatom was taking preventive measures. It has prepared to reduce the damages caused to itself and the buyers of Russian uranium.

In part of the company’s statement, it is said that “despite the low risk of applying such restrictions, preventive measures to minimize the possible damages to the company and buyers to enter, including analyzing the possibilities of transferring orders to local Russian companies and providing legal support.”
