Chad’s first presidential election after military rule
The people of Chad go to the polls today to elect their first president after the military rule over the country. |
According to the international group Tasnim news agency
, “Ardis Debi” was killed in May 1400 while visiting the army units that were fighting with the rebels in the north of the country, after 30 years of holding the seat of the president of Chad. After that, a transitional council consisting of high-ranking officers was formed and General Mohamed Idris Debi, the son of the president, was chosen as the interim president of Chad.
According to Al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper, interim president Mohammad Idris Debi, former prime minister Albert Bahimi and seven other candidates will compete in this election.
The soldiers cast their votes yesterday and it is expected that the preliminary results of the election will be announced on April 21 and the final results on May 5.
If none of the candidates get more than 50 percent of the votes needed to enter the presidential palace, the election will be extended to the second round and the second round of the presidential election will be held on June 22 of this year.
Chad’s presidential election is being held today while the opposition parties and a number of civil organizations have boycotted it. They believe that “Dubai” and its allies have control over important governing institutions and this issue can affect the integrity and transparency of the elections. Chad predicts that Mohammad Idris Debi will enter the presidential palace by getting the most votes.
