EU agreement on security obligations for Ukraine

According to the international group Tasnim news agency, the European Union An agreement has been reached on security obligations for Ukraine. These obligations are supposed to be implemented in the summer and will be applied until Ukraine joins the European Union and NATO. It reported based on a preliminary report citing a confidential draft of the security commitments obtained by this newspaper. It will, in the long term and with partners, contribute to Ukraine’s security commitments aimed at helping Ukraine to defend itself, resist attempts to destabilize and prevent future aggression.

Based on this, the ambassadors of EU member states in Brussels have reached an agreement on it. These measures guarantee political, military and economic support for this country attacked by Russia. The European External Action Service (EEAS) and the government in Kyiv are coordinating. Therefore, the security obligations should be implemented no later than the beginning of July this year.

According to this report, the European Union assures Ukraine of urgent consultations in case of further attacks. Both parties must first agree to it. Indirectly, it is ruled out that if the attacks continue, EU troops will participate in the battle against Russia alongside Ukrainian troops. However, Brussels promised Kyiv to continue supplying lethal and non-lethal weapons, continue training troops, help reform the security sector, support the country’s demining and cooperate in countering hybrid threats and cyber attacks. The European Union is also committed to providing extensive support for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Russia has opened another front with a ground attack near the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine. . The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced that about two years after leaving the region, Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian border town of Vochansk on Friday morning. Local officials said they helped civilians leave the city, which was under heavy fire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke of heavy clashes.
