According to the report of the international group Tasnim news agency quoting “De Sight” magazine wants to name a street in honor of the Russian opposition activist Alexei Navalny in the French capital. Navalny “has become a symbol of freedom in Russia and beyond Russia,” Senate member Francis Schepiner said during a Paris City Council meeting where the decision was unanimously approved.
Based on the decisions made, the future Navalny Street will be located in the noble 16th district of Paris – not far from the Russian Embassy. In this regard, Schepiner said: France looks at the “long history” with Russia. He, who was the mayor of this area until recently, said: exiled Russians were often welcomed in this area.
He emphasized: changing the name of Chantemesse street Alexej-Nawalny-Strasse, especially in this area, supports “resistance against the Russian regime”. Avenue Chantemesse runs directly past the Russian Embassy.
Until his death, Navalny was the most prominent Russian opposition figure. He died on February 16 at the age of 47 in a remote penal colony above the Arctic Circle. Navalny is serving a 19-year prison sentence there on charges of extremism, which he dismissed as politically motivated.
Navalny has been in prison since 2021. . He had returned to Russia from Germany before that. He spent the recovery period in Germany after the poisoning that he blamed on the Russian government. Navalny’s supporters and many Western politicians blame Russian leader Vladimir Putin for the death of this opposition figure.
