The European Union wants to use these reforms to better control migration to Europe. These measures are intended to reduce the burden on the shoulders of the main countries of entry such as Italy and Greece.

According to this law, in the future immigrants who have little chance of being accepted as refugees , are barred from continuing their journey through asylum procedures at the EU’s external borders and can be deported directly from border camps. Accordingly, asylum seekers are housed in prison-like conditions for a maximum of three months – although this period can be extended in the event of a crisis. Families with children must also go through these steps.

Human rights organizations have been criticizing these asylum reforms for months. According to the pro-refugee organization Peru Asil, Germany allows member states to largely withdraw and turn away from supporting refugees by classifying neighboring countries or other countries along migration routes as safe.
