Marine rescuers discovered the body of a 6-month-old refugee baby in the Mediterranean Sea who was traveling with his family to the Italian islands. |
According to the international group Tasnim news agency, the tragedy of the victim Refugees in the Mediterranean Sea continue under the strict and self-interested policies of the European Union.
Spiegel weekly reported that sea rescuers found a dead baby in the Mediterranean Sea. found near the Italian island of Lampedusa. This baby was on an iron boat that had more than 40 passengers. According to the rescue organization SOS Humanity, the crew of the rescue ship “Humanity 1” discovered the boat. After setting off from Sfax in Tunisia, the group spent two days on an unseaworthy boat in the Mediterranean waters hoping to reach Europe. According to ANSA news agency, the body of the dead baby, as well as the mother and her other child, were brought to Lampedusa by the Italian Coast Guard. This child was about six months old.
According to the data of the Italian Ministry of Interior, this year approximately 20,000 people arrived in Italy by sea (until May 28), while This figure was more than 48,300 people in the same period last year. In these very dangerous crossings of Europe, there are always devastating accidents of boats carrying refugees. The European Union has recently concluded several agreements with neighboring Mediterranean countries to limit immigration from these dangerous crossings – including Tunisia. Immigrants to the islands of this country has adopted stricter measures to prevent the entry of immigrants and to facilitate and accelerate deportations, and in this regard, it has even assigned tasks to the army.
According to this data, the most dangerous migration route in 2023 remains the Mediterranean Sea with at least 3129 deaths. In this way, under the shadow of anti-immigration policies of European countries, the Mediterranean Sea has become more deadly for immigrants and asylum seekers than ever before. Regardless of the number of victims, asylum seekers are considered the cause of more deaths.
However, immigration remains an unresolved crisis in the European Union, and the European Union has to solve this crisis. And reducing the victims of asylum seekers, instead of creating legal ways for immigrants to enter, continues to increase the pressure on this oppressed group and puts stricter policies towards them on the agenda.
In the continuation of strict policies against asylum seekers, the Council of Ministers of the European Union recently, after years of negotiation, finally approved the new asylum reform plan of this union, which leads to facilitating and accelerating the process of deportation of asylum seekers.
The European Union wants to use these reforms to better control migration to Europe. These measures are intended to reduce the burden on the shoulders of the main countries of entry such as Italy and Greece.
According to this law, in the future immigrants who have little chance of being accepted as refugees , are barred from continuing their journey through asylum procedures at the EU’s external borders and can be deported directly from border camps. Accordingly, asylum seekers are housed in prison-like conditions for a maximum of three months – although this period can be extended in the event of a crisis. Families with children must also go through these steps.
Human rights organizations have been criticizing these asylum reforms for months. According to the pro-refugee organization Peru Asil, Germany allows member states to largely withdraw and turn away from supporting refugees by classifying neighboring countries or other countries along migration routes as safe.
