In January 1402, the Ethiopian government reached an agreement with the authorities of the region known as Somaliland, which wants to separate from Somalia, that in exchange for recognizing this region, a 20-kilometer passage was allocated for Ethiopia to reach the Red Sea for 50 years. and Ethiopia will establish a military base there.
Following the signing of this agreement, the Mogadishu government considered it a violation of the sovereignty and territorial unity of Somalia, and the agreement canceled the aforementioned and relations between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa became very dark so that the Somali government expelled the Ethiopian ambassador in Mogadishu at the end of last April.
The tribes of five states in the north of Somalia declared independence in 1991 and called the region under their rule Somaliland (Somali Land), but no country in the world has recognized Somaliland and At the international level, only one autonomous region of Somalia is recognized. With the Somaliland authorities, he submitted it to the Ethiopian parliament so that after its approval, the legal foundations for its implementation would be provided.
Addressing the members of the Ethiopian Parliament, he said: This agreement is an important step towards Ethiopia’s access to the sea.
according to the Mogadishu New Somalia newspaper, Minister Ethiopian Transport added: The agreement with Somaliland represents Ethiopia’s real effort to create a land passage to access the sea, and this will bring about fundamental changes in the transportation industry and create a new chapter in the cooperation of Horn of Africa countries.
