4 NATO member countries demanded a “defensive line” on the border with Russia
Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland asked the European Union to build “defense structures” along the thousand-kilometer border with Russia and Belarus.
According to Reuters, these countries, all of which share a border with Russia or Belarus, called for “extraordinary measures” to protect themselves. In a joint letter sent to the President of the European Union, they claimed that this action is necessary to “protect the European Union from military and combined threats with Russia”.
The officials say the plan should be discussed at a two-day summit in Brussels starting June 27, during which EU leaders will discuss the defense budget and other issues.
The letter states that considering the size and costs of this action, which some EU diplomats estimate will cost around 2.7 billion dollars, actions at the level of the entire bloc are necessary for political and financial support.
NATO countries have repeatedly accused Russia and Belarus of compounding threats, including deliberately sending refugees to Europe’s borders. Both Moscow and Minsk have denied these accusations.
