Democrats are trying to contain Biden’s “weak” performance in the debate with Trump
Reuters reported that US President Joe Biden’s allies are trying to contain the fallout from his poor performance in the first presidential debate against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
According to this news agency, Biden’s election campaign hoped that he would appear strong in the debate so that voters’ concerns about his age and recent forgetfulness would disappear. Instead, Biden appeared with his occasional voice and several unintelligible and half-finished sentences.
One Democratic donor, who did not want to be named, called her performance “disqualifying” and predicted that some Democrats would reconsider calling for her to step down and replace her with another candidate in August.
But a senior Democratic strategist also said it would be unprecedented for a sitting president to leave so late in an election cycle, although there have been calls to do so.
Also, the Reuters interview with gray voters also shows that last night was not a good night for Biden. They described Biden’s appearance as “weak and embarrassing” and “difficult” to watch the debate.
Two White House officials claimed in the middle of the debate that Biden had a cold, but that only reflected aides’ concerns about his performance. Kamala Harris, Biden’s vice president, also said in his justification that his record in the past 3 and a half years as president is more than a 90-minute event.
On the other hand, Trump is facing questions about his readiness for the presidency due to his conviction last month in New York.
Reuters writes at the end that none of the candidates are popular and polls show that American citizens are not satisfied with the two options they have. At the same time, this country has become extremely polarized and the majority of voters have expressed their concern that after the announcement of the results, a period of violence may begin.
