Female suicide bombers killed 18 people in Nigeria

Nigerian authorities announced: a series of female suicide attacks in Borno state in the northeast of the country left at least 18 dead and 30 injured.

Barkindu Saidu, Director General of the Borno State Crisis Management Agency, said: These female suicide bombers attacked several weddings, funerals and hospitals in separate attacks in the city of Gwoza, killing several people and injuring others.

He added: 18 people have been confirmed killed so far, among them children and pregnant women.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for these attacks. Since 15 years ago, Nigeria has become a place of rampage of extremist groups that have killed thousands of people and displaced millions of others.

Boko Haram and its branch group “Daesh West African Province” are the most important militant groups active in Borno.

Nigeria is also struggling with criminal militias in the northwest and flare-ups of ethnic and tribal violence in the central states, and kidnapping is a major problem across the country.

Women, children and students are the main victims of hostage takers, and most of them are released after a few days and in exchange for paying exorbitant amounts of money.

Armed people in Nigeria last March attacked a primary school in the northwest of the country and kidnapped at least 285 students.

In March, Hampenin armed men kidnapped more than 200 people, mostly women and children, in northeastern Nigeria.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came to power last year promising to solve the problem of insecurity in Nigeria, but critics say the violence is out of control.
