Philippines: We will act recklessly to protect our interests in the South China Sea

The Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines warned China that Manila will not relent in protecting its interests in the South China Sea.

The South China Sea is one of the 3 regions in East Asia where there is a possibility of confrontation between the great powers. Beijing now claims ownership over a large part of this sea; A claim that has been opposed by the neighboring countries of this sea. The Philippines is one of these countries.

According to the Reuters news agency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines announced today (Tuesday) by issuing a statement to China: Manila will act recklessly in protecting its national interests and territorial integrity in the South China Sea.

This statement adds: Both countries emphasize the need to establish honesty, mutual trust and create conditions for constructive dialogue on the South China Sea issue.

Manil emphasizes: We have seen significant progress in the management of the sea issue, but there are still many differences in this field. Both sides insist on continuing the talks in order to reach an agreement in this regard.

5 Brunei countries, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam claim ownership over parts of the South China Sea. However, Beijing claims a large part of this sea. Maritime trade in the South China Sea is over 3 trillion dollars annually, and huge resources of fossil fuels are buried under the sea bed.

America, in line with its containment policy against Beijing, seeks to exploit disputes in the South China Sea in order to get closer to China’s neighboring countries. The Philippines has now agreed to the US use of its military bases.
