According to Barron’s website, Germany and Niger reached an interim agreement in late May that would allow the German military to keep its air base in Niger’s capital until the end of August, but the two countries are negotiating for an extension. This agreement did not come to fruition, especially because German soldiers no longer enjoyed immunity from prosecution in this African country.

In recent months, Berlin has been using its airbase in Niamey specifically to return its nationals from African countries to Germany.

The government of Niger had previously announced in a statement that this country has canceled the military agreement with the United States. On the other hand, at the end of last year, the government of Niger also canceled the military cooperation agreements with France and forced this country to withdraw its troops.
