16 dead after the collapse of a school building in Nigeria
Following the collapse of a two-story school building in Plateau state in central Nigeria, at least 16 dead bodies have been pulled out from under the rubble.
According to the AFP news agency, the students trapped under the rubble were asking for help and their parents were frantically looking for a way to save them. Concerns about the loss of students and teachers continue and so far only 5 students have come out of the rubble alive.
It is believed that this school has more than a thousand students.
It has been said that efforts are underway to save people and security personnel have also arrived at the site. The cause of the fall is still unknown, but residents say that it happened after three days of heavy rain in the area.
Building collapse is common in Africa’s most populous country. This incident happens mainly because of weak laws in the field of building construction and poor quality building materials. In 2021, at least 45 people were killed due to the collapse of a multi-story building under construction in a wealthy neighborhood.
