Fossil fuels account for 81% of the global energy mix

Despite extensive efforts to decarbonize the economy, fossil fuels will still account for more than 80% of the world's energy mix in 2023.

reported by Mehr News Agency, last year, in addition to the overall energy consumption, the global oil consumption reached a historical milestone of more than 100 million barrels per day, which is due to the high demand for gasoline, diesel and kerosene. It was from the epidemic.

According to the report of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce, last year, the United States increased its superiority as the largest oil producer in the world by setting a new record and surpassing Saudi Arabia and Russia. China also surpassed the United States in terms of oil refining capacity and reached 18.5 million barrels per day, but the utilization rate of its refinery remained lower than that of the United States.

But among all the energy sources in the world, which one has been the most consumed? This chart shows the energy resources used worldwide in 2023, measured in hexajoules. The data comes from the Energy Institute’s new World Energy 2024 Statistical Survey.

According to these statistics, fossil fuels make up 81% of the global energy mix. Despite extensive efforts to decarbonize the economy, fossil fuels still account for more than 80% of the world’s energy mix in 2023.

Coal was responsible for 32% of the energy consumed worldwide, followed by natural gas with 26% and then oil with a 23% share. Global coal production reached a record 179 exajoules last year, surpassing the previous record set in 2022. The Asia-Pacific region was responsible for nearly 80% of global coal production, with Australia, China, India and Indonesia contributing significantly.

Global coal consumption continued to increase this year and exceeded 164 exajoules for the first time. China remains the largest consumer of coal, accounting for 56% of the world’s total consumption. However, in 2023, India’s coal consumption will surpass the combined total of Europe and North America for the first time.

In particular, oil consumption rose sharply last year compared to 2022, largely due to China’s easing of zero-covid quarantine policies. The share of renewable energies in the total primary energy consumption reached 14.6%, which was an increase of 0.4% compared to the previous year.

These clean sources, together with nuclear energy, accounted for approximately 19% of the total primary energy consumption. Renewable energies such as solar and wind accounted for 8% of the energy produced in 2023, followed by hydropower with 6% and nuclear power with 4%.
