UNRWA condemned the destruction of the agency’s headquarters in Gaza

The head of UNRWA called Israel's attack on the organization's headquarters in Gaza a clear disregard for international humanitarian laws.

Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) condemned the destruction of the headquarters of this organization in Gaza this Monday.

Lazzarini wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Another episode of flagrant disregard for international humanitarian law. United Nations facilities must be protected at all times. They should never be used for military or war purposes. Every war has rules. #Gaza is no exception to this rule.”

Earlier this month, Israel repeated its accusations that some UNRWA employees are Hamas facilitators, this time naming 108 of them as such, and asked Lazzarini to investigate the issue. expel them.

Lazzarini recently pointed to the statement of 118 countries of the world regarding the increase of political and financial support for this agency, and appreciated the wide support of the countries of the world to UNRWA.

The countries of Slovenia, Kuwait and Jordan put forward a plan to issue a joint statement regarding increasing political and financial support for UNRWA in the United Nations, and this plan not only includes issuing a statement in support of the Relief and Employment Agency for Palestinian refugees by signing 118 member countries of the United Nations led, but all 15 members of the Security Council also approved and signed this statement.

Earlier, following the claims made by the Zionist regime in January regarding the possible participation of 12 UNRWA employees in the attacks of Hamas on October 7, 2023 (15th Mehr 1402), a research group was created. In the following weeks, many of UNRWA’s financial sponsoring countries suspended or stopped about $450 million in aid to the organization.

Since then, many of these countries, including Sweden, Canada, Japan, the European Union and France, have resumed financial aid, but countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom have not.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres had previously announced that the suspension of aid to UNRWA, the main aid agency in Gaza, has taken place while months of Israeli military operations have turned the region into a “humanitarian hell” and 2 million And its 300,000 people are in dire need of food, water, medical services and shelter.
