6 dead in student protests in Bangladesh/universities were closed
According to Webangah News quoted by Mehr News Agency quoted Reuters, following the death of at least 6 people in student protests against the quota system for government jobs in Bangladesh, the government of this country has closed all universities until further notice.
Massive protests in Bangladesh over government job quotas have gripped the country for weeks. In the government job quota mechanism, 30% is allocated to the family members of the fighters of the independence war of this country from Pakistan in 1971. This mechanism has angered the students who see the high rate of youth unemployment in front of them. According to statistics, out of the population of 170 million people in Bangladesh, about 12 million young people are unemployed or not studying.
After Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of this country refused to fulfill the demands of the protesters, the protests intensified in Bangladesh. Protests in Bangladesh turned violent last week after students protesting the quota clashed with student organizations supporting the ruling Awami party. The police used tear gas and plastic bullets to disperse the protesters.
According to the police, 6 people including at least three students were killed in these protests. In response to these protests and to maintain and restore order, the authorities have sent anti-riot police and Bangladesh Border Guard militia to the universities.
