Amelie Audea-Castera, the French Minister of Sports, initially announced the ban on September 24, 2024. A few pages later, he confirmed that no woman from the French contingent will wear a hijab during the Olympic Games.
After the ban was announced, Marta Hurtado, the spokeswoman for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, called the ban “false” in a statement released on September 26.
On May 24, Amnesty International together with several other organizations sent a letter about this ban to the International Olympic Committee, asking this organization to seriously ask the French sports authorities to remove the restrictions imposed on covering and remove the hijab both in the Olympics and in other sports events.
Amnesty International said that the International Olympic Committee gave an “inadequate” response to the letter. In response, this committee claimed that it is not within the authority of this institution to comment on the prohibition of hijab for French athletes and that “different countries have different definitions and interpretations of freedom of religion.”
Amnesty International said in a statement on July 16 that the hijab ban is indicative of a “discriminatory double standard in French politics”. According to this institution, the said ban violates international regulations. This institution also emphasized that this ban represents the “discriminatory plan” of the French authorities and the “weakness” of the International Olympic Committee on the eve of these games. The Summer Olympic Games will be held from August 5 to 21 and the Paralympic Games will be held from September 7 to 18, hosted by France.
