German diplomats claim that Berlin considers the death sentence “cruel and inhuman punishment”. It is said that this person has been accused of “mercenary activities, espionage, terrorist acts, forming an extremist ring, tampering with vehicles and telecommunications lines, as well as illegal actions related to firearms, ammunition, and explosives.”

Since the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, there have been numerous reports of foreign nationals joining guerrilla forces to fight Russia. Moscow has described these nationals as mercenaries and legitimate targets for the Russian army.
