15 dead and 150 missing after the refugee boat overturned near Mauritania

A boat carrying African refugees had an accident near the coast of Mauritania, as a result of which 15 people died.

According to the Reuters news agency, the International Organization for Migration announced that 15 people were killed and 150 others were injured after a boat carrying 300 refugees from Gambia capsized. were missing This boat capsized near the capital of Mauritania. 

These refugees were trying to reach the Spanish Canary Islands from the coast of West Africa when this incident happened to them. This route is considered one of the deadliest routes for asylum seekers. 

The International Organization for Migration announced in a statement: The Mauritanian Coast Guard managed to save 120 people on board this boat. 10 of these survivors were taken to the hospital for treatment due to unfavorable conditions. 

The Spanish government, in cooperation with African countries, is trying to prevent illegal asylum seekers from entering the Canary Islands in the north of this continent. However, the unfavorable conditions of sub-Saharan countries have made many of these refugees, with the hope of a better life, suffer the hardships and dangers of traveling to reach European countries.
