Russia’s serious warning to Armenia

Russia warned Armenia against turning west and following Ukraine's path.

Russia has warned Armenia against aligning with the West, expressing concern that Yerevan could follow the path Ukraine took after the 2014 ouster of pro-Russian Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

According to Al-Quds al-Arabi report, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that while Armenia has the right to choose its political direction, Moscow hopes to prevent a repeat of the geopolitical shift it is witnessing in Ukraine.

In the Caucasus, Russia has long been seen as a force to protect Armenia. However, relations between Moscow and Yerevan have cooled recently because Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is turning his country towards the West.

As a result, Russia stood aside and the forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan were able to take back the disputed region of Karabakh. Nevertheless, Peskov stressed that Russia still considers Armenia an ally and wants to continue cooperation with it.

Earlier on Monday, the European Union announced in a statement that it approved a $10.8 million aid package to support the Armenian army. According to this media, for the first time, the 27 member bloc of the European Union decided to support Yerevan through the European Peace Facility.
