North Korean debris balloons disrupt flights in South Korea

South Korean authorities announced yesterday Wednesday that balloons containing garbage, which are said to be sent from Pyongyang to Seoul, have landed in the presidential palace of South Korea! If this claim is true, this is the first time that the said balloons will land in the grounds of the South Korean presidential palace, which is a no-fly zone.
South Korea’s Presidential Security Service has announced that chemical, biological and radiological threat response teams have been dispatched to collect the balloons. According to officials, no security risk or chemical contamination was found in these balloons.
According to Yonhap, the South Korean military refused to shoot down the balloons for fear of releasing their contents. According to the authorities, these balloons have also landed in parts of Seoul, and the residents of the area were prohibited from approaching them according to the instructions and immediately reported their observations to the nearest military unit or police station.
These developments follow South Korea’s previous claims that balloons containing garbage and waste from North Korea arrived in Seoul. The South Korean military has resumed broadcasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda by re-installing large loudspeakers on the border with North Korea.
North and South Korea have always used balloons for their propaganda and counter-propaganda wars since the Korean War in the 1950s. This action has intensified in the last year and thousands of balloons have been sent across the border from North Korea since May.
This is the 10th time this year that balloons from North Korea have entered South Korea in retaliation for a similar action by the South. Pyongyang says that the South’s activists send announcements, night letters, food, medicine, money and USB flash drives (memory cards) containing Korean videos and series to Pyongyang through these balloons.
