The trip of the Kuwaiti delegation to Damascus to reopen the embassy

Syrian media reported today the trip of a high-ranking Kuwaiti delegation to Damascus with the aim of resuming bilateral diplomatic relations and reopening the embassy.

Syria’s “Al-Watan” newspaper confirmed today that a delegation from Kuwait recently traveled to Damascus, and the purpose of this trip was to prepare for the resumption of bilateral diplomatic relations at the highest level and as soon as possible.

Some Syrian media sources also reported that this Kuwaiti delegation met with some Syrian officials in Damascus a few days ago to prepare for the reopening of the embassy, and Tamim Madani, the Syrian ambassador to Kuwait, who planned this meeting almost a month ago. He had also attended these meetings.

Al-Watan newspaper quoted knowledgeable sources and reported that, in addition, a delegation of Kuwaiti businessmen have recently consulted with their Syrian counterparts in Damascus to explore cooperation opportunities between the two countries.

In 2012, Kuwait severed political relations with Syria and in the same year expelled the Syrian ambassador and closed its embassy in Damascus. After Qatar, Kuwait was the second Arab country to recall its ambassador from Syria. Kuwait strongly opposed Syria’s return to the Arab League and Riyadh’s closeness to Damascus, which led to Assad’s invitation to the Jeddah meeting in 2023.

On April 15, 2023, Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said that his country will not deviate from the consensus and agreement of the countries regarding Syria.

In a statement, he emphasized the importance of the Syrian regime taking real and concrete steps to build trust, including the release of prisoners and detainees, announcing the fate of the missing, facilitating the return of Syrian refugees and asylum seekers, facilitating the delivery of aid to all areas of Syria, etc.

While today the Syrian media are talking about the imminent reopening of the Kuwaiti embassy in Damascus, two days ago the media reported on Italy’s decision to appoint an ambassador in Damascus and resume diplomatic relations with Syria.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Friday that the current special envoy of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Syria, Stefano Ravagnen, has been appointed as the country’s ambassador in Damascus.

Currently, six embassies of EU member states operate in Damascus, which are Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Czech Republic and Hungary.
