Reuters: America does not want Israel to bomb Beirut

The United States is leading a diplomatic effort to prevent Israel from attacking Lebanon's capital or major civilian infrastructure in response to the deadly attack on the Golan Heights, five people familiar with the matter said.

Washington is trying to avoid war after an attack on the occupied Golan Heights that killed 12 people, according to five people, including Lebanese officials and European and regional diplomats. It is full-scale between the Zionist regime and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement.

According to the Reuters news agency, Tel Aviv and the United States have blamed Hezbollah for the recent attack on the Golan Heights, but the group denies this accusation.

The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the focus of the diplomacy was to limit Tel Aviv’s response to not targeting Beirut, the southern suburbs that form Hezbollah’s heartland, or key infrastructure such as airports and bridges.

Elias Bou Saab, Deputy Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, who said that he has been in contact with American mediator Amos Hochstein since Saturday’s attack on the Golan Heights, told Reuters that “Israel can protect Beirut and its surroundings from the risk of escalation.” prevent tension.”

He added: “If they avoid targeting civilians, Beirut and the suburbs, their attack can be well calculated.”

The authorities of the Zionist regime have previously said that their goal is to “hit Hezbollah”, but they do not want to enter the region into an all-out war. However, two regional and European diplomats familiar with the matter said that Tel Aviv has made no commitment to avoid attacks on Beirut, its suburbs or civilian infrastructure.

The US State Department said it would not comment on the details of the diplomatic talks, although it was seeking a “durable solution” to end all cross-border fires.

A spokesman for this ministry also told Reuters: “Our support for Israel’s security is unwavering against all threats.”

White House spokesman John Kirby told reporters that “Israel has the right to respond to the Golan attack, but no one wants a wider war.”

He added: “Regarding the recent conversations, I must also say that such an incident happened, but I will not disclose the details.”
