Landslide in India killed 56 people + pictures

A landslide in southern India caused by torrential monsoon rains has killed dozens of people and trapped hundreds of others under mud and debris.

Indian authorities announced on Tuesday that at least 56 people were killed by a landslide in the Indian state of Kerala. At least 70 people have been hospitalized and many others are missing or trapped under the mud.

The southern coastal state of Kerala has been hit by heavy rains and the collapse of a key bridge at the disaster site in Wayanad district has hampered relief efforts, according to local media.

This landslide, which occurred due to heavy rain, is expected to continue.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he spoke to Kerala Chief Minister Pinari Vijayan and asked for help from the country’s federal agencies.

More rain and strong winds are expected in Kerala on Tuesday, the state’s disaster management agency said.

The number of deadly floods and landslides has increased in recent years, and experts say climate change will worsen the problem. Dam building, deforestation and development projects in India have also exacerbated human losses.
