Zelensky: Either we will join NATO or we will go nuclear again!
reported by Mehr News Agency According to Kyiv Post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says that in a conversation with former US President Donald Trump, he told him that Ukraine’s response to a Russian attack is to go nuclear again. Or to join NATO and Kiev’s preference is the second option.
This is the first time since the start of Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022 that Zelensky directly mentions the possibility of the country becoming nuclear again.
Zelensky did not elaborate on when the conversation took place. The President of Ukraine also mentioned the Budapest Memorandum in his speech at the European Council in Brussels. According to the security agreement signed in the 1990s, Kiev received security guarantees from the United States, England, and Russia in exchange for denuclearization after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
In this speech, he said: Which nuclear country was hurt? none other than Ukraine; Which country gave up its nuclear weapons? all of them? No, only Ukraine did. And who is at war now?!
Zelensky further referred to the alleged conversation with Trump and added: As a result, our situation is like this today, and I raised this issue with Trump. What is our escape? Or that Ukraine has nuclear weapons, which is a defensive aspect for us, or that we will need some kind of alliance in addition to joining NATO. But today there is no other coalition (other than NATO). NATO countries are not at war and their people are alive, and as a result we prefer NATO to nuclearization.
According to Zelensky, Trump described his argument as fair in response! Until December 5, 1994, Ukraine was officially the third largest nuclear power in the world. Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphasized that Ukraine should get rid of the thought of joining NATO.
