After 12 years, France resumed diplomatic relations with Syria

French media announced that the government of this country will send 4 diplomats to Damascus this Tuesday after 12 years.

reported Mehr News Agency Citing Reuters, French media announced that Paris will send four diplomats to Damascus today, Tuesday, for the first time after 12 years of breaking diplomatic relations with Syria.

According to Jean Noel Barrow, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, the diplomats will aim to “restore French influence” in Syria, “establish initial contacts with the new authorities” and “assess the humanitarian needs of the people”.

France severed diplomatic relations with Syria in 2012. The Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of France further added: There are several hundred French citizens in Syria, and Paris interacts with the Syrian authorities through the Romanian Embassy and its diplomatic representation in Beirut.

On Sunday, the French Foreign Ministry announced the visit of this country’s delegation to Syria in a statement.

In the statement issued by the French Foreign Ministry, it is stated that a diplomatic delegation will go to Damascus on Tuesday this week.

The statement of the French Foreign Ministry adds in this connection: the said diplomatic delegation is supposed to meet and talk with the new rulers (based in) Syria.
