The letter states that hackers attacked the computers and systems of the third-party cyber security service provider BeyondTrust and obtained unclassified documents.
According to this letter, the hackers used a key that the company used to remotely provide technical support to the offices of the US Treasury Department. This ministry has claimed that the mentioned company had warned them about this intrusion on December 8th and is currently evaluating the effects of this cyber attack in cooperation with the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
One of the spokespersons of the Chinese Embassy in Washington refused to accept any responsibility related to this hacking attack and emphasized that “Beijing strongly opposes the US action to tarnish China’s image.”
