Who is Brian Hook?

Brian Hook, born on June 4, 1968, is a lawyer and public politician who received his BA in Marketing from the University of St. Thomas in 1990 and his M.Sc. in philosophy from Boston College and received his law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law. In 1999-2003, he was a legal partner at Hogan & Hartson in Washington.

During the presidency of George W. Bush, Hook served as Assistant Secretary of State for International Affairs, Senior Advisor to the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Special Assistant to the President in Policy in the White House Office of the Chief of Staff and worked as a consultant in the Office of Legal Policy at the Department of Justice. He also worked as an adviser to John Bolton when he was the US ambassador to the United Nations.

Opposition to Trump’s presidency

Brian Hook was a serious opponent of Trump before Donald Trump won the 2016 presidential election and entered the White House; Hook was one of the members of a group of foreign policy advisors of Mitt Romney, the candidate of the Republican Party in the 2012 election, who opposed Trump’s presidency in the 2016 election by writing a protest letter signed by 121 Republican Party figures.

Despite this protest action by Brian Hook, with the inauguration of Trump’s first administration and during the time of Rex Tillerson, the then US Secretary of State, in 2017 as the director of the office The political planning of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs started working. During Rex Tillerson’s tenure as the Secretary of State, Hook’s name was heard more often in matters related to Iran when he headed the task force that was tasked with negotiating with European governments to amend the JCPOA as requested by Donald Trump.

After Tillerson was fired from the US State Department by Trump’s order and Mike Pemio, the hard-line US Secretary of State, took office, Brian Hook was one of the few diplomats who The subsequent cleaning of this device was spared from Tillerson’s team and was considered among Pompeo’s close associates.

In 2018, Hook was appointed as the “in charge of the Iran desk” in the US State Department, or the US representative in Iran affairs, and along with the hard-line members of Trump’s cabinet, such as: Mike Pompeo, John Bolton, Nikki Haley and others actively participated in hostile actions against the Islamic Republic and the promotion of the maximum pressure campaign against Iran.

According to the American media report, Brian Hook was also among the people who had a close relationship with the terrorist organization Mujahideen Khalq (Monafiqeen) and in 2018 and a few days after the assassination Martyr Lieutenant General Soleimani and Martyr Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis met secretly with a representative of the members of this terrorist organization. In 2019, Hook resigned from his position in charge of the Iran desk in the US State Department and was replaced by “Elliot Abrams”.
