U.S. Proposes Demilitarized Zone Around Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant as Condition for Ukraine Peace Deal
The English section of Webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News agency and TASS, reported that the Wall Street Journal claimed in a report, citing sources, that the U.S.believes one condition that could help resolve the Ukraine war is declaring the areas surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant a neutral zone—wiht control handed to Washington!
The Wall Street Journal did not specify which areas near Zaporizhzhia have been proposed for demilitarization or how Washington woudl exercise control over them.Additionally, Washington has not clarified who would assume obligation for managing the plant if this proposal were accepted—whether it would be assigned to either side or another party.
The Zaporizhzhia plant, located in Enerhodar, consists of six power units with a total capacity of 6 gigawatts. It is Europe’s largest nuclear power facility.
Russian forces seized control of Zaporizhzhia in late February 2022. As then, both sides have accused each other of hazardous shelling and drone attacks on residential areas and also the nuclear plant itself.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry has emphasized that it will not transfer control of the plant to Ukraine or any other country.
