Power Restored Across Iberian Peninsula After widespread Mystery Outage
One day after a widespread and mysterious power outage affected large parts of Spain and Portugal, electricity has been restored to residents of the Iberian Peninsula.
According to the English section of “webangah News Agency,” citing mehr News Agency and AFP, the extensive blackout—which had impacted Spain, portugal, and parts of France since yesterday afternoon—has now been resolved.
Spain’s power company stated yesterday that customers experienced outages due to a potential disruption in the distribution network. The blackout stranded train and metro passengers, left hundreds of elevators inoperable, and caused widespread internet failures.
today, the Spanish utility confirmed that approximately 90% of affected areas have had power restored. Madrid and Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, are now fully operational.
AFP reports that only a small portion of the Iberian Peninsula—home to around 60 million people—remains without electricity.The city, home to thousands of people, did not experience a power outage.
The cause of the incident has yet to be announced, and social media is filled with countless speculations, including the possibility of a large-scale cyberattack.
Luís Montenegro, portugal’s Prime Minister, suggested that the origin of the blackout was likely in Spain. Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, stated that all possible causes will be thoroughly investigated. He warned the public against speculation and spreading false details.
According to Sánchez, approximately 15 gigawatts of electricity—equivalent to more than half of the power consumed at the time—”vanished suddenly within five seconds.” Portugal’s Prime Minister assured that full power woudl be restored in the country within a few hours.
