UN: Iran climbs 2 spots in Human Development Index
According to the latest UN report, Iran has climbed 2 spots in the Human Development Index, surpassing the world’s second-largest economy and coming within reach of the “vrey high human development” country group.
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has released its latest report on human development indicators, providing data for 193 countries, including Iran. The 2025 Human Development Report,based on 2023 statistics,shows that Iran improved its global ranking by two spots despite U.S. illegal sanctions. While Iran ranked 77th in 2022, it rose to 75th in 2023.
Iran is now just one step away from joining the “very high human development” group. The UN classifies countries into four tiers:
- Very high human development (74 countries)
- High human development (50 countries)
- Medium human development (43 countries)
- Low human development (26 countries).
Iran trails the lowest-ranked country in the top tier by only one spot.
Iran Overtakes china in Human Development
The report indicates Iran outperforms 118 nations, including China—the world’s second-largest economy—which dropped from 74th in 2022 to 78th in 2023. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines also fell below Iran, landing at 76th. Other countries trailing iran include Thailand,Brazil,Ukraine,Egypt,Jordan,Lebanon,Tunisia,Indonesia,Iraq,and India.
Iceland Tops Global Human Development Rankings
Iceland leads with a score of 0.972, followed by Norway and Switzerland. Denmark (#4), Germany (#5), Sweden (#6), Australia (#7), Hong Kong (#8), Netherlands (#9), and Belgium (#10) complete the top ten. South Sudan ranks last with a score of 0.388.
