As Tensions Escalate Between India and Pakistan, Citizens Along Border Areas Rush to Stockpile food and Essential Supplies
The English section of Webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, reports that amid rising tensions between neighboring nuclear powers India and Pakistan following the Pulwama attack, citizens of both countries have begun stockpiling food, while households near the border are fleeing to safer areas.
In the most severe conflict between the two nations in nearly three decades, India and Pakistan have accused each other for a third consecutive day of launching new military strikes using drones and artillery.
Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad intensified after India’s strikes last Wednesday on several locations in Pakistan, which it described as “terrorist hideouts.” These attacks were in retaliation for last month’s assault on a group of tourists in Pulwama, located in Indian-administered Kashmir.
A resident of India’s Punjab state reported that families living within 13 kilometers of the Pakistani border have evacuated women and children to safer zones. Drones fired from India also alarmed citizens in Lahore, a Pakistani city near the border. Pakistani officials stated these drones were shot down over Lahore.
Following the drone strikes, emergency sirens sounded, prompting even the U.S. consulate to instruct staff to take shelter. Schools remained closed yesterday, while Lahore residents—according to shopkeepers—are stockpiling food, gas cylinders, and medicine. The surge in panic-buying led authorities to issue warnings against price gouging by businesses.
Fleeing Under Cover of Darkness
Kashmiri civilians near the Line of Control (LoC) face an even graver threat. Locals report evacuating villages at night amid cross-border shelling in valley areas while seeking refuge in shelters. The prime Minister’s Office in Pakistani-administered Kashmir confirmed over 400 people have been evacuated from two LoC districts so far.
