U.S. Commerce Secretary Says Full⁣ Lifting of Tariffs on China Unlikely ​After Ongoing Talks

The U.S. Commerce‍ Secretary under former ⁤President Donald Trump, Howard Lutnick, stated that a complete removal of tariffs at the⁢ end ⁤of ongoing negotiations ⁢between the U.S. and ‌China is unlikely.Lutnick responded to ⁢a related question ‍by saying: “Not at all. Washington ⁢and Beijing need⁤ dozens of meetings,and first,they must‌ de-escalate tensions.”

White House spokesperson ⁤Caroline Levitt said yesterday that Trump remains committed ⁤to his ⁤stance and will not unilaterally ‍lift tariffs against China.

yesterday, Trump wrote on his social⁣ media platform Truth ​Social: “It‌ seems 80%‍ of tariffs on China are correct,” while adding⁤ that “it⁣ depends on Scott Bassett, the U.S. Treasury Secretary!”

The U.S. president had previously ⁤stated that Washington would reduce‌ tariffs on Chinese goods as or else, developing trade relations between‍ the two countries would not⁢ be possible. ‍

The first round ⁣of ‌talks between Washington and Beijing regarding customs duties​ and the trade ‍war⁢ began hours ​ago in Geneva, Switzerland. Currently,the U.S imposes 145% tariffs ⁢ on ⁢China, while Beijing has set 125% customs duties on American goods.
