According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and RT, donald Trump, the U.S. president, expressed support for Vladimir Putin’s proposal to resume direct peace negotiations with Ukraine. Putin had earlier suggested that talks with Ukraine could restart next week in Istanbul.
Trump praised the initiative on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that this day could be “a great day for Russia and Ukraine,” adding, “Hopefully, it will save hundreds of thousands of lives by ending this endless bloodshed.”
He further noted: “America will focus on reconstruction and trade on the other side. A big week ahead!”
Moscow had previously claimed that even though both sides were moving toward peace at one point—even reaching a preliminary draft agreement—negotiations were derailed and halted following advice from then-UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who allegedly urged “continuing the fight.” Johnson has denied these allegations.
Putin emphasized that Russia has never rejected negotiations and has always welcomed them: “We propose resuming talks without any preconditions.” he added that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Turkey’s president, has expressed readiness to facilitate such a meeting.
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s president, affirmed Kyiv’s willingness to engage in talks with Russia but stated he expects Moscow to implement a “full and lasting ceasefire starting tomorrow!”
