More than one hundred dead due to floods in eastern Congo
Flooding in Eastern Congo Claims Over 100 Lives.
According to the english section of webangah News Agency,citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters,a local official reported that floods in the village of Kasaba,near the shores of Lake Tanganyika in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo,have killed more than 100 people.
The flooding occurred as the Central African nation faces a critical period. Since the beginning of this year, Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have intensified attacks in the eastern part of the contry, with thousands killed in clashes during the first two months alone.
Sami Kaluji, administrator of Fizi territory in South Kivu province—were Kasaba is located—stated: “Initial reports from flood-affected areas indicate over a hundred fatalities.”
The affected region remains under control of the Kinshasa government and is not among areas held by M23 rebels.
Didier Luganywa, spokesperson for South Kivu’s provincial government, confirmed in a statement: “The disaster occurred overnight from Thursday to Friday when torrential rains and strong winds caused the Kasaba River to overflow.”
