Chinese president’s harsh remarks against US despite trade agreement
Chinese President Strongly Criticizes U.S. “Bullying” and “Hegemonism” Just One Day After Temporary Tariff Truce in Trade War
Reported by the International Economics Desk of Webangah News Agency, citing CNN: Chinese President xi Jinping sharply criticized the U.S. government’s “bullying” and “hegemonism” just one day after a temporary agreement on tariffs in the trade war with America.
Speaking on Tuesday to a gathering of Latin American and Caribbean officials—including the presidents of brazil, Colombia, and chile—who had convened in Beijing for a summit, Xi stated: “Unprecedented changes unseen in a century are accelerating, making unity and cooperation among nations essential.”
He added: “There are no winners in tariff or trade wars. Bullying or hegemonism only leads to isolation.” Xi had repeatedly issued this warning during his trade conflict with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Xi’s remarks came one day after Washington and Beijing announced an agreement to significantly reduce tariffs on each other’s imports for 90 days—an unexpected truce that eased tensions from their damaging trade war and boosted global markets.
While the White House framed the tariff suspension as a victory for America, touting “Trump’s unparalleled skill in securing deals that benefit Americans,” Chinese analysts and state media hailed it as “a major win” for China, reinforcing Beijing’s firm stance.
The Weibo account “Yuyuan tantian”, linked to state broadcaster CCTV, posted: “This proves China’s resolute countermeasures have been highly effective.” The retaliatory measures clearly pressured Washington into lowering tariffs post-negotiations.
Despite swift concessions from other nations after Trump imposed retaliatory tariffs on April 2nd, China took an entirely different path—standing firm by imposing its own tariffs on U.S. goods while executing additional countermeasures. For over a month,Trump’s duties against China peaked at an unprecedented 145%,while China maintained retaliatory rates at 125%,straining both economies.
Per Monday’s joint statement, this weekend’s deal means Washington will temporarily slash overall duties from 145% to 30%, while Beijing cuts its import levies from 125% to 10%. However, Fentanyl-related duties (20%) imposed by America last February/March remain intact, as do China’s corresponding retaliations. Additionally, Beijing agreed to suspend or revoke non-tariff measures enacted since April 2nd.In recent weeks, China resisted pressure through diplomatic campaigns positioning itself as globalization’s defender, urging others to oppose what it calls “U.S.bullying”. Even amid tuesday’s ceasefire,Xi vowed deeper solidarity with Latin America/Caribbean regions where Trump sought reassert influence.Trade between them surpassed $500 billion last year,a first accordingtoXi.*
